Autocar’s 10 most popular videos of 2017

10. McLaren 720S review | McLaren’s new Ferrari-rivalling supercar

Our drive in the Ferrari-rivalling McLaren 720S just makes our list, although it's still racked up a mighty 272,000 views. Take another watch above.

9. Mercedes-AMG A45 versus Volkswagen Golf R review | Four-wheel-drive hot hatches go head to head

A hot hatch is one of the most accessible ways into performance car ownership. Two of the best are the Mercedes-AMG A45 and Volkswagen Golf R, and they’re both four-wheel drive. We put them head to head for a video showdown.

8. 2017 BMW 5 Series vs Mercedes-Benz E-Class | Can the 530d beat the E350d?

Another German head-to-head shootout, this time between two executive heavyweights: the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. As rivalries go, it doesn’t get much fiercer than this, so take a watch to find out who rules supreme over the class.

7. New Porsche 911 GTS review | Carrera 4 GTS tested | As good as a GT3?

The Porsche 911 has a legion of fans, which is understandable given that it's one of the most complete sports cars on the market. The bewilderingly large 911 range now includes the GTS, which has more power and a tweaked suspension set-up to make it the sharpest 911 that's not a GT3. Have a look at what we made of it above.

6. Ferrari 812 Superfast review | New 800hp supercar tested

It takes a certain Italian confidence to call a car ‘Superfast’ - but Ferrari's 812 does have a V12 with 800 metric horsepower to back the title up up. Almost 400,000 watched our video to see just how quick the 812 Superfast is and to find out if a car called Superfast can excel in other areas. Hint: it’s a Ferrari, so it doesn't do to badly…

5. Range Rover Velar review | Is Land Rover's new SUV a match for the Porsche Macan?

The Range Rover Velar showcased cutting-edge design and a plush cabin and along with the promise of a new level of on-road manners for a Range Rover. Jaguar has made a huge success of the mechanically similar Jaguar F-Pace, so Land Rover hopes the same for the Velar. Take a watch of our video review to find out if it deserves top-seller status like the that of the Jaguar F-Pace.

4Ford GT review | Ford's new Le Mans-ready supercar tested | Autocar

Ford doesn't do supercars very often - the last GT went out of production in 2006. But the Blue Oval does them well, as the new GT proved. More than half a million of you have watched the 216mph V6 (brave move, Ford) supercar in action. Few cars cars achieved such online popularity across the year.

3. Bugatti Chiron review | Bugatti’s new 261mph hypercar tested

Given the performance figures it offers, our Bugatti Chiron video was bound to feature highly in this ranking, with 900,000 views racked up across 2017. Those numbers? How about 261mph, £2.5 million, four turbochargers, 8.0 litres, 16 cylinders and 1479bhp. The only thing that could stop it from hitting 280mph? Tyres. Watch the review to get a taste of just how superlative the Chiron is compared with even its predecessor, the Veyron

2. What's the best 4x4? | New Land Rover Discovery vs Jeep, Toyota, Isuzu, Mercedes and Dacia

In 2018, around one in three new cars sold will be an SUV, but only a very small percentage of them will ever be taken off the road. To redress that imbalance, we took six of the hardiest to a quarry to find out which emerged on top. Our contenders covered every price category, from the Dacia Duster all the way up to the Land Rover Discovery and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. And the winner was, well, you’ll have to watch and find out.

1. Drag Race Special | Audi R8 V10 versus R/C Audi R8

Okay, technically this video dates from 2016, but it was our Christmas special, so it went up right at the end of the year. And, like a dog, our unusual Audi vs Audi drag test film wasn't just for Christmas: it's had more than 1.5 million views in 2017.

We pitted the radio-controlled Losi 6IX Audi R8 LMS car against its real-life Audi R8 V10 counterpart. The video has got toys, it’s got cars and it’s got a grown man dressed as an elf. If you’ve not watched it yet, you're missing out.

And finally… 2018 Alpine A110 review | New Porsche 718 Cayman rival tested

Not the most watched (yet), but this is one of our newest videos, showcasing a car that we'll be keeping a close eye on in 2018: the Alpine A110. Matt Prior was so taken with it that he awarded it five stars in his first drive review, an ultra-rare honour given our high standards. You can tell he's quite excited by watching this video...
