The technology trial is intended to address the lack of trust consumers have for autonomous vehicles

Jaguar Land Rover has developed a system that projects the direction of travel onto the road ahead of a self-driving vehicle.

The system has been designed to tell other road users what the vehicle is going to do next and is intended to alleviate concerns over a lack of trust in autonomous vehicles.

The projections, tested on autonomous pods, use a series of lines with adjustable spacing. The gaps lessen as the vehicle is preparing to brake and extend when the pod accelerates. When approaching a turn, the bars spread to the left or right to indicate the direction of travel. 

The research programme is part of the broader UK Autodrive autonomous and connected driving project, which involves numerous self-driving trials from not only Jaguar Land Rover, but also Ford and Tata.

Last year, as part of the same research, Jaguar Land Rover revealed an autonomous pod with ‘virtual eyes’, which can signal to pedestrians when it is safe for them to cross a road.

The projection tech was tested on a fabricated street scene in Coventry, with engineers recording trust levels reported by pedestrians with and without projections. 

Jaguar Land Rover said the projections could be used to share obstacle detection and journey updates with pedestrians in the future.

Pete Bennett, future mobility research manager at Jaguar Land Rover, said: “The trials are about understanding how much information a self-driving vehicle should share with a pedestrian to gain their trust. Just like any new technology, humans have to learn to trust it, and when it comes to autonomous vehicles, pedestrians must have confidence they can cross the road safely.

  Reading this article still only enforces the idea we will no longe be incharge of our Transport, which, taken further would mean we wouldn’t necessarily have to own a Car, there will be no enjoyment of driving, for some actually talking will be a real effort, and yes I know this nirvana is maybe a decades or two away,so we’ll still have good old fashioned Cars where you’ll have to some of the driving, but in the future travelling will be a chore.......

It admirable that JLR are making big investments in lots of tech all over the place. For a small company they are clearly trying to innovate and differentiate themselves from others who are more interested in cutting costs through mergers. However they are also loosing money. Something has to give! 

 

My my gut feeling is that Tata Motors will not stop this sort of behaviour at JLR as TATA also does the same thing. I actually think Tata might get the chequebook out and buy out a company such as Mazda who could use the tech and spread the development costs. Kind of admirable!

Tata doesn't have any available money!  As I have been pointing out, according to the money markets, JLR can only pull itself out by slashing operational costs while at the same time investing in new models.  Tata doesn't have the money to give JLR to invest in new models, so guess where that ends you up.  The management at JLR should all be sacked...today!

then worry about autonomous, if you don't then you won't have a company much longer.  They've got the XJ EV coming but they need a cheaper option to make more vehicles unless they want to become more niche
