Not a hugely involving or engaging drive, but offers as much superb, relaxed pace as you need.

What is it?

It's Mercedes' new S-class-based coupe, now on sale in the UK. This is the base version: just the 80 grand, 5.5 litres and 388bhp, plus seven-speed auto, air-suspension with ABC active body control and a standard kit-list that is genuinely (I've measured in 12-point font), longer than my arm.

What's it like?

Fabulous. Its ride translates well to British roads so it's exceptionally comfortable, even on optional 45-profile 18-inch tyres/wheels (55s/17s standard).

Noise levels are whisper-quiet, it's flipping quick, corners flatly and the interior looks and feels fabulously built. It's even big enough for four but, unlike in an S-class, people won't think you're a chauffeur when they see you driving it.

Should I buy one?

If you want as much refinement as an £80,000 coupe can give you, absolutely. The CL isn't a hugely involving or engaging drive, but that isn't the point - it offers superb, relaxed pace. As much as you need, in fact: forget the even more profligate 600 or AMG - this is the one to have.

Re: Mercedes-Benz CL 500

Anyone know when the diesel CL is coming?? I heard a story that the development guy from MB did an interview hinting a diesel and a convertible version. I'd strongly consider buying the diesel
