The best bits from Japan's nuttiest tuning show

The doors to Japan’s premier custom and tuner show, the Tokyo Auto Salon, opened today. As always the show delivered a huge variety of cars, from very wonderful to very weird.

The Tokyo Auto Salon used to be a kind of underground pirate event. Now, though, the show is big business. Japan’s car industry takes it very seriously, seeing the Tokyo Auto Salon as a way to boost sales in a sluggish market and especially to get through to Japan’s 18-30 year olds.

Despite the economic downturn, the show hosted a record number of exhibitor stands this year (388) and had more than 600 cars on display.
