First pictures of Skoda Octavia RS released ahead of Frankfurt debut

The hot Skoda is back, as these first official images of the new Octavia RS show. Due for its first public appearance at September's Frankfurt motor show, the new RS goes on sale in the UK as both an estate and a hatchback in December. Pricing has yet to be announced, but expect the hatch to nudge under £17,000 to give keen competition to the Citroen C4 VTS and the forthcoming Chevrolet Lacetti WTCC R+ and Seat Leon Cupra.

The 1.8-litre turbocharged four of the old RS has been replaced with a turbo 2.0-litre sourced from parent company Volkswagen's £3500 costlier Golf GTi. With 62mph hit from rest in 7.3sec and a 149mph maximum (7.5sec and 148mph for the estate) the new RS is the fastest Skoda production car ever. Autocar has also heard of a forthcoming diesel version of the RS, following little brother Fabia and Seat's Leon Cupra along the hot oil-burner route, likely to be powered by the Passat's mighty 170bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine.

Like its successful predecessor, the new car will come in vivid paint colours, with a palette including Race Blue metallic, Sprint Yellow, Corrida Red, Diamond Silver and Black Magic.
