BMW has revealed it intends to recall 268,000 diesel-engined models in the UK over a potential fire risk caused by a leaking part.

The recall specifies that the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler can, in some cases, leak glycol liquid. BMW, which found the issue in an internal investigation, says "in combination with typical soot particles and the high temperatures normally present in the EGR module this might result in smoldering particles". 

These particles run the risk of melting the car's intake manifold "in very rare cases", resulting in a fire risk in "extremely rare cases". The original campaign to rectify this, launched in August, involved around 480,000 cars, but that has since been extended to 1.6 million, with 268,000 UK cars affected.

Don't let a recall put you off

The recall affects several BMW models, including examples of the 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, BMW 6 Series, X3, BMW X4, X5 and BMW X6, with both four and six-cylinder diesel engines affected depending on the model. Four cylinder cars built between December 2014 and August 2016 are affected, while six-cylinder cars produced between July 2012 and June 2015 are also part of the recall. Certain 1 Series, 2 Series, 7 Series and BMW X1s, built as early as 2010, will also be checked.

As with all recalls, letters are being sent to the registered owners of affected cars advising them to contact their dealer to book it in. The recall is unrelated to an earlier fire risk, which led to 294,000 3 Series in the UK recalled.

BMW said in a statement "During further examination of engines with a similar technical setup, the BMW Group analyzed individual cases that were not included in the original technical campaigns. These individual cases posed no significant risk to our customers. Nonetheless the BMW Group decided to further reduce even this minor risk by expanding the country-specific technical campaigns".

I have had my BMW on recall

I have had my BMW on recall for over 2 months now and BMW dealer can still not tell me how long it will take to fix it. Shambles. We need a campaign to get BMW to fix this soon for all BMW car owners

BMW EGR recall

Recieved notice from BMW UK to contact my local delaership (Lloyd BMW Newcastle) to fix the EGR known fault, booked my call in immediately, BMW rang to say the part does need replacing on my 3 series but they do not have the part in stock!! 20 DAYS on!! Yes 20 DAYS I am still waiting!! with no end in sight. Be warned BMW are taking cars of customers knowing full well they cannot complete the work anytime soon!!

BMW EGR RECALL

Hi Michael - I made an appointment at the beginning of December last year for a recall check of my BMW 330D M sport, on 31st December - that was the earliest they could see it. After checking it over they said the EGR was completely split and leaking and was a fire hazard. They said they would need to keep the vehicle until they could get a replacement part but they couldn't tell me when that would be, or even give me an rough ETA. Three weeks later they still have my car and still can't give me any idea at all how long I will need to wait. As far as I am concerned this level of service is beyond embarrassing for BMW. Was thinking about approaching the tabloids as I think the people need to know about this atrocious state of affairs.

JLR reliability

JLR cars may have premium prices, but definitely have no premium reliability. My brother bought an Evoque in 2016. I think he must have some top secret electric version of it, becouse its battery went completely flat after he left it in a garage for two months. And this happened to him for the second time now. Service guys told him, they had a Velar customer who reported flat battery after he had his car only for one week. I used his car once for a full day and on each second start the car reported, that some asistent systems are not working. Internet is full of Land Rover reliability issues.
