R205 model will be limited to just 400 units - no plans for a UK launch

Subaru has launched a high-performance, Japan-only version of the Impreza WRX STI.

The Subaru Impreza WRX STI R205 builds on last year’s Spec C model and has been developed following Subaru’s participation in the Nurburgring 24 Hours.

Powering all four wheels is a 316bhp, 318lb ft 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Power has been increased by retuning the ECU and adding a new sports exhaust system. It uses a six-speed manual gearbox.

Subaru has worked hard on improving the R205’s handling by using STI tuned dampers and a revised front suspension set-up. Subaru claims road holding has been improved by using Bridgestone’s specially designed RE070 tyres, which are equipped to R205-exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels.

Styling upgrades include a new front grille, new front and rear under spoilers and a new rear spoiler. It also gets R205 badging on the front grille and rear hatch.

The R205 will cost 4,510,000 yen (£30,400), with production limited to 400 units. There are no plans to bring the model to the UK.
