New black cab goes beige as LEVC draws international interest in electrified range-extender taxi

The London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) has said there is strong overseas interest in its new TX electric taxi and is showcasing a German-spec model at the Frankfurt motor show.

LEVC, which recently changed its name from The London Taxi Company, has designed the TX to meet 2018 regulations for the UK capital that require all cabs to be capable of zero emissions as well as to have worldwide appeal.

The TX can drive more than 400 miles via its electric motor and petrol range-extender eCity powertrain, with an electric-only range of 70-80 miles. In the UK, prices for the cab will start from £55,599; the bulk of taxi drivers buy on finance, with prices starting from around £177 per week.

The car being shown at Frankfurt is painted in Eifelbein, a shade of beige that German law required all taxis to be painted in from 1971 until 2005. While that regulation is no longer in place, the vast majority of German taxis remain painted in that colour.

Carl-Peter Forster, LEVC’s chairman, said: “The reveal of the taxi in Germany’s taxi colours is a statement of intent - we are here to tackle the air pollution crisis in cities across Europe with the most advanced taxi in the world."

LEVC has already taken a large order for the TX from Rotterdam-based taxi and mobility company RMC and says it has interest from other European cities. European TX models will be built at LEVC’s new, purpose-built, 37,000-square-metre electric-car facility in Warwickshire.

The company is also building a factory in Yiwu, China, to make TX variants for that country. LEVC says it has had interest from high-end Chinese hotels to use the TX as courtesy shuttles.
