Sports car's 2.0-litre engine gets a boost from 158bhp to 181bhp; torque also increases slightly and exhaust note has been tweaked

Mazda's updated MX-5, which is on sale today, starts at the same £18,995 price tag as the pre-facelift version, with small price increases higher up in the range. 

£100 has been added to the 1.5-litre SE-L Nav car, £200 to the Sport Nav, and £400 to the 2.0-litre Sport Nav car. A new GT Sport Nav trim has been added to the lineup, with adaptive LED lights, a reversing camera, blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert as standard on the new range-topper. It's priced £1000 above the next-highest spec, the Sport Nav, and is only available with the 2.0-litre engine.

Across the board, the car gets a 15% hike in power, taking its more powerful 2.0-litre Skyactiv engine to 181bhp from the current 158bhp.

Improved combustion, a higher redline of 7500rpm (up from 6800rpm) and tweaked accelerator response all contribute to the revised MX-5’s new performance. The exhaust note has been fettled, too.

Torque increases by around 4lb ft to 151lb ft, although Mazda hasn’t revealed any new performance figures for the revised car. Top speed will rise from the current 133mph, while acceleration will be clipped closer to 7.0sec from 7.3sec.

New WLTP testing means that CO2 figures for the car have changed, with 4g/km CO2 added to the convertible's 1.5-litre engine, and 1g/km CO2 added to the 1.5-litre RF variant (both 143g/km). The 2.0-litre car now emits 5g/km less CO2 with a manual gearbox (156g/km), and 10g/km less when fitted with an automatic (157g/km).

Driven this week

For the first time, the MX-5 will also get automatic emergency braking for both forward and reverse gears, a reversing camera, a driver attention monitor and traffic sign recognition.

A brown roof will also be available, while the wheels will be finished in darker paint.

The changes will apply to both the standard MX-5 and MX-5 RF. Sales of both begin in the autumn.

They’re currently getting well ovdf 200bhp from the two litre without forced induction. It would be great if they could hit 250. Worth saving up for.

Turbos are excellent. No need to be scared.

Remember, it is not forced induction of it is taken willingly.

Believe you are ENTIRELY missing the point of the GT86. Go back and read the comments made by the original R&D team members. Apart from that, do you really believe that Toyota could not have made this happen well before now, had that been their intention?.
