Ford takes the Mustang to the track with the new GT4; it's packed with performance parts and the promise of a "very affordable price"

The Ford Mustang GT4 factory race car has been revealed at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Built to compete in both the US and Europe in 2017, the new Mustang GT4 builds on the highly successful Shelby GT350R-C that won IMSA’s Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge this season.

Like the GT350R-C and the Le Mans-winning Ford GT, the GT4 is a joint development with race preparation specialist, Multimatic. It has been developed from the outset with customer, not factory race teams in mind.

“This car will enable us to run a customer racing programme worldwide,” says Dave Pericak, director of Ford Performance. “We wanted to get this to market as quickly as we could. We’ve already tested it on track and in the wind tunnel; we’re extremely happy with its performance and it’ll be homologated early next year.”

Although the best elements from the GT350R-C have been incorporated into the GT4, Pericak stresses that this is an all-new machine.

“We learned a lot racing the R-C, in terms of aerodynamics and suspension, for example, to make the car more forgiving in certain situations,” he says. “It’ll be extremely adaptable to different levels of competition, teams and drivers. There will also be a way for people to inexpensively adapt it to endurance racing spec.”

The GT4’s price is yet to be announced, but Pericak promises it’ll be “very affordable” and describes early interest from teams as “phenomenal”. Ford hasn’t published a full spec, but the car features unique rear lower control arms, extensive aerodynamic development with a front splitter and rear wing, and Multimatic DSSV dampers.
