PSA boss Carlos Tavares has refused to confirm that Peugeot will replace the Audi TT-rivalling RCZ

"It still has a couple of years to go," he said "and we are going to concentrate on making sporty derivatives of mainstream models." That means projects such as the forthcoming 308 R will be given priority.

He also ruled out the chances of Peugeot returning to making other more exotic sports cars, despite the company previewing such models with a variety of recent concept cars, including last year’s Exalt.

Since joining the company at the end of last year Tavares has been on a mission to reduce the numbers of models sold by Citroën, DS and Peugeot and the complexity of platforms. His aim is to reduce global models from 45 to 26, built on just two platforms, raising the possibility that the RCZ replacement maybe a victim of this cull. 

Tavares did confirm however that the company was pressing on with other technologies. "An EV is a few years away but they’re only useful as commuter cars. We really want to do petrol plug-in hybrids for family cars and long-distance journeys."

However, he also revealed that the radical Hybrid Air technology previewed by both Citroën and Peugeot "has no business case at the moment as we need to share it with another car maker."

The RCZ is a classy, interesting, fun coupé that shows Peugeot has got its mojo back

The question is how well the RCZ sells? You do see a few but nowhere near as many as the Audi TT. I also like the idea of sporty core models instead.

I have never really liked the RCZ but I do like the idea of faster core models. I would really like to see a 508 in the fashion of the 405 MI16, but with no petrol engine over 1.6 litres its hard to see it ever happening.

Seems like that corner of the market has all but disappeared..quick petrol saloons with 2l engines. Tech has moved on I suppose but the high-revving multivalve 90s saloons that were in the BTCC were great cars.

......ditch the best model they make? Let's face it, these faster, sportier core models never quite live up to expectations, despite all the promises. And as the RCZ is based on the 308, it's not as if it requires a bespoke platform. The 405 MI 16 was a superb car and of its time, but I would have thought the business case for an equivalent 508 today would just not stack up.

I had hoped a next generation RCZ would have been a more restrained and elegant coupe with 4 seats rather than the current cars +2 accomodation. Think of a 308 2 door coupe to rival the BMW 2 series, but cheaper and focusing more on comfort than outright performance (and with the option of a full length fabric sunroof). It could have been a modern urban icon for Peugeot.
