It's easy to forget that this time last year Saab was being towed to the scrap yard by then-ailing parent company GM.

Booking space at the 2011 Detroit show was the last thing on the mind of management desperate to force GM to halt the winding up process.

Which is why Saab's presence at the Detroit show was outside, opposite the entrance to the Cobo Hall.

As i walked onto the display the PA system announced that Saab 'approaches things from a different perspective'.

Certainly, grabbing space directly opposite the show displayed impressive lateral thinking. But, at the same time, the contrast between Saab and the rest of the industry leaves it wide open to headlines declaring the company to be 'left out in the cold'.
