Think of the best Japanese sports cars of all time and it's a fair bet that the Honda NSX and Mazda MX-5 will be near, if not at, the top of the list.

Question, then: how would the new, 2019 Toyota Supra compare to these two Japanese greats?

Not as a like-for-like comparison: the new Toyota, developed alongside the BMW Z4, is a different kind of car. It's a big front-engined sports coupe, while the Mazda MX-5 is a lightweight front-engined roadster and the Honda NSX is a mid-engined supercar.

But against the Mazda and Honda, does the new Toyota Supra show that its gestation involved German engineering? Can you tell, and if so, does it matter? Are we looking at a Japanese future classic?
