The hallmark of value in a modern, full-sized hot hatchback in 2019 may well be thought of as a UK showroom price that starts with a ‘2’. The Focus ST will meet that mark – but only if you buy one with a diesel engine and keep your optional spending very modest indeed.

The more tempting petrol ST opens at just under £32,000 and, once you’ve added the must-have options, might end up another four figures more expensive. But even that is competitive value for a car of this performance and, with a bit of haggling, you could put one on your driveway via PCP monthly finance, after a 10% deposit, for little more than £400 a month. If you’re interested in a diesel ST as an extra-spicy fleet option, meanwhile, you’ll find the car competitive with the likes of the Skoda Octavia vRS diesel and equivalent ‘compact premium’ options on CO2 emissions.

Focus ST doesn’t hold its value quite as well as the Honda Civic Type R but outperforms the Golf GTI by a fair margin

Our petrol ST showed itself well capable of decent economy by edging over 40mpg on our touring economy test, although driving it more typically of a performance car, you should expect a daily return in the low-30s.
