Next Ford Mondeo will be first to show company's next design language

The next-generation Ford Mondeo will be the first preview of the company’s new design language, according to Ford's vice president of global design, J Mays.

Speaking in an interview with, Mays said the next Ford design language will be on a number of cars, but we will “start to see hints” on the next Mondeo.

Mays also affirmed Ford’s belief that its worldwide customer base has increasingly similar tastes. The next Mondeo is set to follow the Focus and Fiesta and become Ford’s third world car.

The finished car is expected to hit the showrooms in 2014, when it will replace the European Mondeo and the US market Fusion.

This car should be quite interesting as it is likely to be more targeted at the american market than the Fiesta and Focus so can it be interesting enough for the more discerning European market.

Good to know that they are moving away from kinetic. None of their designs ever really did it for me ( except the Kuga ), the new Focus looks terrible and even the Fiesta is starting to age badly imo.

The US Fusion really isn't all that bigger than the Mondeo. It's only 6cm longer, and is actually 6cm lower. But yeah, cars in this segment are now just too big.

Shame about the weight though?, i'm sure some savings could have been made, the 2-litre eco-boost with 237bhp gives the car impressive performance and still return decent mpg, but the 0-60 figure isn't even average, because of the car weight!.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Mondeo built in Belgium? If your reply suggests we should be supporting British jobs, then many of the newest most fuel efficient engines Ford produce which go in to the cars assembled in Spain are built in Bridgend, right here in the UK.

Support British jobs, buy a Fiesta and forget about whether it's been assembled at Ford's Spanish or German plants.

Seems logical, the current Mondeo was the car that kicked off the Kinetic design language if I remember correctly. I actually quite liked Kinetic - sharp, well-proportioned, at least it stood out. Didn't work quite so well with the Ka or facelifted Focus though, and I think the new forthcoming Focus is something of an acquired taste - a bit dull if I'm honest. I still think the Fiesta looks decent after two years, and the recent refresh of the Mondeo is keeping it current. I just hope the next "design phase" is a good one, as this batch of Kinetic cars, on the whole, have been pretty good-looking when you consider what Fords looked like during the 1990s and early 2000s (previous Fiesta,Mondeo,current Focus). Intriguing to see how "global" the next Mondeo will be... possibly we'll see a new name. Then again, they were going to ditch 'Fiesta' and ended up keeping it.
