The new week awoke to intriguing rumours to the effect that Ferrari might be sniffing around Jenson Button as a likely candidate to replace the beleaguered Felipe Massa in the Maranello line-up for 2012.
Good thinking, I say. Don’t think there’s much ‘previous’ between Jenson and Fernando, which shouldn’t get in the way of a Ferrari Good Housekeeping award there.
Ferrari has blown hot and cold about Massa’s future with the team but, with some welcome exceptions, the consistency of the popular Brazilian’s race performances have never quite recaptured the form which briefly carried him to the 2008 world championship – albeit for only about six seconds.
That said, McLaren seems absolutely and utterly determined to keep Button on its books down in Woking alongside Lewis Hamilton, and is reputedly ready to trigger an ‘automatic’ extension to JB’s contract for next season.
It’s even possible that McLaren will offer an added financial incentive for the 31-year-old to ink an even longer-term contract after his dazzling recent performance in the Canadian GP.
Don’t doubt for a moment that Jenson wouldn’t fit in well at Ferrari, which is why McLaren are hell bent on keeping him.
