GM and Chrysler have bleak years for sales in 2009

Detroit’s big three all saw their 2009 end of year sales down on 2008’s levels as the recession rocked the US automotive industry.

Chrysler Group was the biggest loser, seeing its sales cut by 35.9 per cent to 931,402 units. General Motors didn’t fare much better as its sales were down 30.07 per cent to 2,084,492 units.

Ford Motor Company, the only one of the Detroit three not to enter Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and receive a government bailout, saw its sales down 15.39 per cent to 1,682,323 units.

The only brands to post any growth in sales in the US last year were Subaru, Hyundai and Kia. Subaru was the biggest winner as its sales rose 15.43 per cent to 216,652 units. Kia’s sales were up 9.75 per cent to 300,063 units while Hyundai’s were up 8.29 per cent to 435,064 units.
