With the keys to two of 2018’s more exciting hot hatchbacks and an empty Blyton Park racetrack, Matt Prior and Dan Prosser find out which is best: the Renault Megane RS 280 or Hyundai i30 N.

The Megane has slightly more power and, in Cup spec as driven here, comes with tuned suspension and a limited slip differential. The i30 N, tested in standard form instead of with the optional performance pack, lacks a diff - but is arguably the more pliant of the two on the road.

But which will come out top on track?

I'd want the normal chassis because where I live is no race track. I want the slippy diff its fwd after all, cant have that combo. I want an auto, don't feel the need to experience a manual anymore, unless it was Japanese. A few other options, such as paint and wheels total 3k. So I am at 32.5k might get a grand off. Yet consensus is its not as good as the Honda that has its own issues and then the all rounder Golf has bases covered. So I think unless you want a track car and not a Honda it will appeal only to RS loyalists.

I must say I really enjoy listening to you two. Always interesting and well judged commentary. Thanks
