Seat has unveiled revisions to the Exeo range for the Paris motor show

Seat will unveil revised Exeo and Exeo ST estate models fitted with the new continuously variable multitronic gearbox at the Paris motor show.

The gearbox will be mated to the 141bhp 2.0 TDI common rail diesel injection engine which Seat claims will allow both models to achieve a combined fuel consumption figure of 48.7 mpg.

The multitronic gearbox works with continuously variable ratios and has both a manual mode controlled by steering wheel shift paddles and a sport mode.

Seat will also unveil changes to the Exeo range including revisions to the front seat and rear bench designs, and the addition of new rear lights featuring LED technology.

The redesigned front seats and rear bench has increased room in the back by 44mm.

Full details of the revised cars’ availability in the UK will be announced closer to their on-sale date.

Still no sign of a Cupra version yet?

My wife's car has a CVT box - I like it. Nissan have given a 10 year warranty on the box, it is smooth and because it's hooked up to a torquey engine it doesn't rev straight to 5000rpm and sit there screaming. I've thought for a while that a CVT would be the perfect match for a diesel, but the only times its been done (Ford C-max 1.6 diesel comes to mind!) it didn't work that well. In theory they can be cheaper than a torque converter or DSG - if built in the volumes that Nissan build them in. Less moving parts and less complicated.

I still maintain I find it strange they went for CVT rather than DSG though...

VAG seem to have a supply issue with the DSG gearbox as delivery times on any model ordered with it seems much longer than a manual. The implementation of the multitronic CVT gearbox on the Exeo has been around for at least one year combined with the 2.0TSI petrol engine only.

The novelty now is that the multitronic CVT will also be added as an available option with the diesel engine too, next to petrol engine range where it was exclusively been offered up to the present.

While I cannot comment on the DSG gearbox supply issue, it is a fact that SEAT has been using DSG gearboxes in every single model produced (with the exception of the Exeo), so I guess it could not be that hard for them to add the Exeo range production numbers in their schedule. I don't know, we 'll see...

On the other hand, the mass production of DSG gearboxes for a large number of vag models has allowed a great suppression on the production costs based on economies of scale.

Finally I 'll have to agree there is nothing wrong at all with a multitronic CVT gearbox: smoother, with selectable speeds and shift paddles on the steering wheel.
