These are reported to be the first pictures of the new Mercedes CLA45 AMG, which will be officially unveiled at next week's New York motor show.

The pictures, which have leaked on to the internet ahead of the car's launch, reveal the full styling of the CLA45 AMG, which will use the same running gear as the Mercedes A45 AMG, which was shown at the Geneva motor show.

Power will come from a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 355bhp and 332lb ft of torque. All four wheels will be driven through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Mercedes-Benz CLA road test review - hero front

The CLS sold on its exclusivity. Can the Mercedes CLA pull the same trick - or do its A-Class underpinnings hold it back?

Why can't they just make the concept car for production. Look at the success of the original TT and RR evoque. Those a class lights are a major disappointment

... don't like the front end and it has Vauxhall Corsa(?) window line...?

Interior is too blingy, it has too many crease lines in the side which make the whole car look uncomfortable in it's own skin, somehow. Looks a bit Volvoey from the side as well.

I think it looks excellent! Small, taut, aggressive.

I like the A Class too but i think this looks better in this guise.

Amazing figures from the 2.0 engine too.

It's a thumbs up from me.

Great looking sporty car! Hoping to change the look of my C180 too! twin fountains

If any car needed more visual balance it's the A-Class. Fortunately the CLA's rump helps to minimise the whacking great nose Mercedes have chosen to endow it with. That said the profile picture implies nothing short of a shooting-brake variant will fully succeed.

As for this AMG CLA. I quite like it. Yes the swoops, curves, creases and vents look daft on poverty-spec models. However on this high-end performance model we're one big-wing away from a German Impreza STI, and I'm a huge fan of Racing refugees.

When I heard about the 2.0 litre lump destined for the A class AMG, I got excited. Then I saw the A class in the flesh and immediately felt less excited. But the CLA has provided another bite at that cherry, and I'll be booking a test drive when it hits showrooms.

There's just one thing remain unsure about. After years of producing cars that look unmistakably Mercedes, it's taking my eyes some time to acclimatise to the curvaceous design accent they've chosen for these latest models. A change was sorely needed, but I'm unconvinced that the Merc's traditional lines translate that convincingly when they attempt to mask it with flowing curves whilst still trying to retain some Merc-ness.

This AWD baby saloon packs 355 horses and 332lb ft of torque. Delivered through a 7-speed DCT Auto this should make this car blindingly fast.

It looks fan-bloody-tastic, and in AMG form, it ought to really go!

From certain angles it looks like a 3 series coupe, maybe even a 1 series?,there's nothing different from the rest of the Pack, the Herd,it's just not enough to turn out a car with the corporate front and old familiar furniture inside, younger Merc driver or would be Merc drivers want more cutting edge interiors.

That's a bit harsh.
