Special edition models are the showcase of Audi's stand at the annual Woorthersee event in Austria

Audi will show seven different custom variants of the A1 supermini at Volkswagen’s annual Woorthersee event in Austria, including this ‘FC Bayern’ special edition model.

All seven designs are the work of Audi chief designer Stefan Sielaff and his team and have been created to demonstrate the range of customisable options that will be available upon the car’s launch in the autumn.

The FC Bayern design is the showcase of the stand, as it commemorates the German team’s achievement of getting to the Champions League final in Madrid later this month. It is kitted out in Bayern colours and features the name and number of Bayern forward Arjen Robben.

Other A1 specials on the stand include taxi and police car variants, as well as a design in the colours of the original Quattro rally car. Audi has also made styling changes to all of the special editions’ interiors.

“The Audi A1 fits in with the GTI meet because customisation has always been a central topic for the Audi fans here at the Worthersee and will also play a special role for A1 customers,” said Sielaff.

Other models on Audi’s Woorthersee stand will include the new R8 GT and RS5 models. The event starts a week today.

Our Verdict

Audi A1

The A1 is a stylish, high quality and competent supermini, if a little expensive, but does it have the edge over the Mini hatch, Seat Ibiza and the Ford Fiesta?

What's the point of any of them? And is the Bayern Munich one aimed directly at BMW/Mini?

Audi(VW)'s acknowledgement or tribute to the locality of the venue of this important fan GTI festival in Wörthersee, Austria:

'taxi' - follow-me airplane taxiing vehicle for airport KLU - Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Kärnten(Carinthia), Austria. i.e., it's a play on a taxiing vehicle livery for the local airport to the Wörthersee GTI festival. http://www.klagenfurt-airport.at/?SIid=2&LAid=en

'police car' - 'Pickerljäger' - is Audi again paying tribute to its Austrian neighbour, with this Austrian police car livery and 'pickerljaeger'(permit/toll hunter) is reference to Austria's autobahn permit. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickerl

no, although of course both being Bavarian companies there is fierce rivalry. It's reference to Audi being main sponsors with FC Bayern. Remember that Audi used two FC Bayern players - Lahm and Schweinsteiger - to preview the A1, just before its public launch.

Thanks for the info Nick, I didn't know that. I always think of Munich as being 'BMW town' so thought it may have been some sort of dig.

It's a shame the Autocar story didn't include a bit more about the relevence of the colour schemes. I may have been able to see the point sooner.

Probably wrong to admit, but I quite like the look of the hotrod styled one, especially the white walled tyres; but maybe I'm just having a nostalgic moment in the knowledge that my BRM replica wheels are waiting at home after a 9 week wait.
