More powerful model will go on sale later this year

Smart is adding an upgraded 0.8-litre diesel model to its Fortwo range later this year.

Although no UK spec has been announced yet, the German model will get 21 per cent more power (up to 54bhp) and 18 per cent more torque (96lb ft) than the current model, without affecting fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The engine remains Euro5-compliant.

The new model will be available in both coupe and convertible form and will get some new equipment, including a folding armrest, a hands-free system, and a colour multimedia display.

Prices have not been announced for the UK, but expect it to cost the same as the outgoing diesel model, which starts at £8972 for the coupe and £10,880 for the convertible. A Smart spokesman told Autocar that the car is scheduled to go on sale in the UK in the last quarter of 2009. Detailed UK specs will be announced nearer the time.
