Gordon Murray Design’s new T27 electric car again dominated at the 60-mile Future Car Challenge
7 November 2011

The new Gordon Murray Design T27 electric car won best overall entry at this year’s Future Car Challenge, a 60-mile eco-rally designed to establish the industry’s most fuel-efficient vehicles.

The annual Brighton to London event – inaugurated in 2010 – featured more than 65 super-frugal cars, MPVs and LCVs. Entrants included a Nissan Leaf, Tesla Roadster, Citroen Nemo van and Peugeot 508 e-HDI.

The event was organised into five energy classes – pure electric (EV), extended range/plug in hybrid (E-REV/PHEV), hybrid (H, HEV), hydrogen (HFEV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) – up to 110g/km Co2 emissions.

Winning the small car EV category for a second consecutive year was the T27 prototype (previously T25). Best production EV went to the Smart Fortwo coupe, with the Nissan Leaf bagging the top prize as most efficient regular production car.

The most efficient large car on the day was the Peugeot 508 e-HDI and the Mini Cooper D was given the crown as the best performing ICE vehicle.

The Tesla Roadster was the most efficient sports car and Citroen’s electric Nemo prototype van dominated as the most efficient LCV.

Autocar editor Jim Holder and editor-in-chief Steve Cropley were among the competitors who took part. Although rankings are yet to be confirmed, Holder used 11kWh/100km of energy in a Volkswagen Golf e-motion, while Cropley achieved around 55mpg and just 89g/km Co2 in a Land Rover Range-e.
