Audi has begun its centenary celebrations with a major ceremony featuring German chancellor Angela Merkel at the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt on Thursday night.

The ceremony featured the formal unveiling of the Audi A5 Sportback. You can see the full Audi A5 Sportback image gallery here.

To mark the centenary, Autocar has put together a picture gallery of some of Audi's highlights.

The celebrations continue tonight, when the 'Audi Rocks 100' party is being headlined by popular German band Die Fantastischen Vier.

Then on Saturday Audi's racing history will be celebrated as several successful cars from its history lap the historic Donauring circuit.

Finally, on Sunday the Czech Philharmonic Choir and the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at a free concert.
