Autocar reported live from the Moscow motor show, where new cars and concepts from the likes of Renault, BMW and Land Rover were unveiled

Both domestic and international brands had a significant presence at the 2014 Moscow motor show and, judging by the cars on display, it's clear the focus was on the growing SUV market segments.

The Moscow show represented the first opportunity for European enthusiasts to see Land Rover's new Range Rover Sport SVR.

The 542bhp model made its world debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California earlier this month, and is powered by a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine. It costs £93,450 in the UK, and has a top speed of 162mph.

Chevrolet's Niva concept was also on display, showcasing how the next-generation SUV will look when it goes on sale in 2016.

Homegrown marque Lada was using the event to showcase three new designs and announce its plans to reinvent itself.

BMW used the Moscow show to reveal its new X5 Security Plus, an armoured version of the firm's family SUV. The special X5 offers protection up to VR6 standard – which means it can withstand gunfire from automatic rifles including the AK47.

The enhanced model is based on the xDrive50i, so is powered by a 449bhp 4.4-litre V8 engine. The price starts from about three times as much as the standard xDrive50i, which puts it at about £160,000.

The show was also the first Russian outing for Nissan's GT-R Nismo. We've already driven the £125,000 car in the UK, finding it to be an expensive but impressively fast machine.

The Nismo can reach 62mph from a standing start in just 2.6 seconds, and is powered by a modified version of the standard Nissan GT-R's 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, which develops 591bhp.

Facelifted models on display included the Toyota Camry and Peugeot 508. It was the first motor show outing for Peugeot's updated Ford Mondeo rival, which features new styling as well as a more economical engine range. The diesel hybrid model, for example, now emits just 85g/km of CO2.
