Refreshed version of Hyundai’s best seller gets updated engine line-up with tweaked look; price undercuts equivalent European diesel offerings

Hyundai's facelifted Tucson - the brand's best-seller - is priced from £21,845 in entry-level S Connect 1.6 GDI specification.

The pricing puts slightly lower than entry-level diesel versions of the Seat Ateca and Skoda Karoq, which £22,970 and £22,950 respectively. The new 48-volt hybrid version of the Tucson is available exclusively with a 2.0-litre engine in Premium and Premium SE specs, and starts at £32,945. The range-topping Premium SE 48V car is £34,945.

The brand pulled the wraps off its refreshed Hyundai Tucson earlier this year in New York, where Toyota also unveiled its Tucson rival, the 2018 RAV4, Hyundai’s best-selling model gets a revised engine line-up with the aforementioned hybrid and new 1.6-litre diesel variants, more safety features and a lightly tweaked design.

The new car comes with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines, with each certified to Euro 6c emissions standard and claimed to offer lower CO2 output and better fuel economy as a result.

As is the case with the pre-facelift Tucson, at the entry level is a 130bhp 1.6-litre GDi petrol, while a turbocharged T-GDi offers 175bhp. Meanwhile, the 1.7-litre diesel of today’s Tucson has been traded for a 1.6-litre with two available outputs: 113bhp and 131bhp. The existing 2.0 CRDi remains, delivering 183bhp.

Drive is sent to the front wheels as standard but all-wheel drive versions are available. A six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox is offered.

Car review

The Hyundai Tucson is a stylish crossover which focuses mainly on easy-going real-world ability, but is that enough to turn people's heads away from the Nissan Qashqai and Seat Ateca?

Hyundai has expanded the list of available driver assist features in the 2018 Tucson. It is offered with autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist and driver attention warning technology. Buyers can add more kit, including a 360deg camera, high beam assist and adaptive cruise control.

Inside, the car comes with a 7.0in or 8.0in infotainment touchscreen, depending on the specification. A premium sound system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and wireless phone-charging come as part of an extended technical features options list, which also includes 3D satellite navigation.

The new £21,845 price is £1990 over the previous entry-level price, although a higher-spec interior and equipment upgrades can account for much of the increase.

Petrol bargin

A 4 pot 1.6 130hp, reasonable kit, Mid-size SUV with 7 year warranty for less than £22k sounds a bargin.  No reason why it can't eat into VAG's 1.0 offerings.

Minimal...

I like the fact that Hyundai has kept the update to a minimum while sharpening a few styling characteristics.

The engine choices are diverse and the new eight speed automatic transmission should also make its way into the upcoming Sportage facelift.
