Factory-fitted protective wrapping and delivery miles make this F1 a time warp back to the 1990s

A brand new McLaren F1 that has never been registered is expected to break records and become the most valuable F1 in existence.

The unused example of designer Gordon Murray’s V12-engined supercar wears the same interior covers and protective wrapping as it did when it left Woking in 1997.

Car number 60 has covered just 239 kilometers (149 miles) – which McLaren has confirmed represents distance covered during its pre-delivery factory test – and comes with all of its original assets, including a Tag Heuer watch.

The Dandelion Yellow car’s Japanese owner hasn’t even sat in the car, so it almost certainly represents the best-preserved example of McLaren’s 627bhp model in existence.

On sale at Derbyshire dealership Tom Hartley Jnr, it is predicted by experts to become the most expensive F1 sold yet, beating a 9600-mile example that recently sold for £11.8 million at Pebble Beach.

The F1 remains one of the world’s most sought-after supercars, with 106 units produced between 1992 and 1998. The three-seat model is powered by a 6.1-litre BMW Motorsport V12 engine. Such was the atmospheric powerplant’s performance that when Autocar tested the F1 back in 1994, it was described as “a car which, unless driven with a cool head, could land you in greater trouble than you could imagine”.

The car’s three-seat layout has inspired a hyper-GT that will be launched in 2019. Codenamed BP23 (standing for bespoke project two, three-seater), the car is under development and will be produced in 106 units, just like the F1.

Funny thing is at first I thought why would you buy one and not drive it, what a pillock. Then with estimate of £12,000,000+ it was a canny move.

One man's canny is another man's bizarre. Imagine owning a McLaren F1 and never being able to recount a single driving story about it, 12 million or no 12 million. In fact, according to the article, the owner never even sat in it. I suppose this article would go down well in an investers circle jerk in Forbes magazine but as a car story it's pretty hollow.

....god, there re some sad bastards out there.

I seem to remember the ex Innes Ireland 250 GTO was kept in a glass box in Japan before he sold it back to the UK where it was re-instated to the UDT Laystall colours, and given its history/ dignity back.

These are motor cars for christs sake not paintings!

Unbelievable, but you'll have to check it over for perishing during storage.   Fuel cell will need replaced (they all do every few years).   Even the engine may have seized.


A good one was said to go for £18 million (that may have been dollars), so one that's absolutely new even thought it will need partly rebuilt?   You could probably double that figure.

Actually, it does have a fuel cell. But its a type of fuel tank, rather than a hydrogen type fuel cell of course.

Completely agree it's a waste of a car to have it just as an investment. You get the feeling if the owner had chosen a decent colour in the first place they'd be getting a million more for it though, so more fool them.

I’d consider a person who could afford to buy a car like this and never so much as sit in it, could afford two. One to drive and one to cherish and invest.

I, myself, keep a 1997 excerise bike, pristine, unwrapped and certainly never sat up on. Offers starting at 10 please. (Pence not million).
