The new M3 snapped testing

BMW's next M3 will use the coupe’s body, but with extended wheelarches and track, as can be seen from this spy photo.

Due on sale in 2007, this M3 will be the first to use V8 power – all previous models have used BMW’s famous straight-six, apart from the four-cylinder unit in the first M3. The V8 unit is a 400bhp 4.0-litre based on the M5’s 5.0-litre V10, redlined at 8250rpm.

Audi’s recently-launched RS4 produces 414bhp from its V8.

BMW has developed a double-clutch gearbox similar to VW’s DSG system. Progress to 60mph should be even more rapid than the current model’s time of 4.8 seconds.

The Volkswagen Eos has much cachet and is pleasant and predictable to drive, but is feeling a little bit long-in-the-tooth
