Peugeot reveals its next best-seller

Peugeot has revealed the first official images of its 207, the car that it hopes will take over from its most successful model ever, the 206.

The new hatch, which will be available in three- and five-door versions when it goes on sale this summer, is not designed to specifically replace the 206, which has sold more than five million examples. Indeed, at 201mm longer and 65mm wider, it sits half a class higher in size.

But it does introduce a number of new features over the old model, including static directional headlamps designed to make it easier to identify pedestrians in town. The 207 will also feature the in-car fragrance diffuser previously seen in Citroën’s C4.

Peugeot is also claiming improved safety, thanks to six airbags as standard and a strategy that goes beyond the top Euro NCAP levels.

The 207 will be available with six engines on launch – 1.4-litre units producing 75 and 90bhp, a 1.6-litre with 110bhp and three diesels, a 70bhp 1.4-litre and 1.6-litres with 90 and 110bhp. A folding-hardtop CC coupé version will follow.

The Peugeot 207 hatchback is safely-played and as such lacks charm, verve and difference
