The Volkswagen Group’s cars have often confused me: VW Phaeton or Seat Toledo, anyone? But after spending a few days in one I’m going to have to add the Skoda Superb to the list.

For all the right reasons though. I just can’t fathom why the VW big cheeses are prepared to sanction a car that’s now tangibly better than a Passat and (whisper it) almost certainly an Audi A6 as well.

The Skoda’s more fun to drive, more refined, has a much better ride and more space. And then you look at the price advantage… In fact, one of the few things going against it is the... er... challenging looks.

Some uncharitable commentators have speculated about the Superb’s future role clogging up taxi ranks. No doubt it will. But it’s way too good for that.
