When it comes to the Porsche 911 I've always had the same view: I love the normal Carrera 2s and I love the crazy ones. But as for all the increasingly bewildering myriad models in the middle, I can take or leave them.
I was reminded of this yet again this weekend when I managed to get my hands on a bog-basic Carrera 2. Up until now I've only driven much fancier versions of the new 997, all with trick suspension, big wheels and the new PDK gearbox. This had no such adornments and it was all the better for it.
In fact, the basic Porsche 911 is an absolutely brilliant sports car and so much better than the fancier ones. It made me fall in love with 911s all over again.
