The 2012 New York motor show already has an advantage over 2011's show due to its scheduling.
Last year, New York show organisers scheduled the show on the same day as the Shanghai motor show, a show along with Beijing that's surely now the most significant in the world.
So while Shanghai 2011 featured major world debuts from BMW, Mercedes and Volvo among many others, New York had to make do with the facelifted Jaguar XJ and XK.
Something had to give, and luckily New York organisers saw the light and decided to move its show forward three weeks to avoid another poor showing from manufacturers.
The big car makers have responded, and there are major launches at New York this year from the likes of Mercedes, Land Rover and BMW
The Big Three are also taking New York more seriously this year, chiefly Chrysler with the unveil of the new SRT Viper.
