After last night’s sad news about Bristol Cars going into administration, I can’t help wondering what will become of Britain’s most bijou luxury car maker.

If history had been different, Bristol could have been up with Bentley by now. As it is, it has been limping along for years. And for as long as any of us can remember, the company has refused to release any sales figures - which probably tells you all you need to know.

So should it be allowed to follow the countless other old British brands into obscurity?

A large part of me hopes not. Perhaps a benefactor can be found who can come up with a way of reinventing the marque. Maybe even a coachbuilding business, putting a Bristol ‘top hat’ on an existing chassis and powertrain. How about a Bristol Mercedes SLS, for instance? I’m sure that such a car would find favour in the US and Asia.

Or maybe I’m just being hopelessly romantic. In tough business conditions, Bristol just wasn’t making the sort of models that luxury sports car buyers want. In which case, it deserves to die.

Question is – what would be your hopes for Bristol?
