It's a shock, but surely no surprise that BMW has announced 850 job losses at the Mini plant in Cowley. This is bad news, not least because so many jobs have been lost at a key British manufacturing plant. But also that this is the first time that the Mini story has taken a backward step since BMW reinvented the brand in 2001. One question though: in light of these job cuts should the management reconsider its plan to make the Mini SUV in Austria? It may be too late - or too expensive. But I'm sure that lots of people in Oxfordshire will now wonder why work is being taken away from them.
