Rolls-Royce unveiled the 100EX at last year’s Geneva show. It forms the basis of the 2007 convertible, which is likely to be called Corniche. Today’s Geneva show sees the launch of a coupe concept which Rolls, with impeccable logic, has called the 101EX.
The 101EX (‘experimental car’) is heavily modelled on the production convertible and both cars are based on a shortened version of the Phantom’s platform, the 101EX being 250mm shorter.
The concept features a suitably high line of applied technology: the body is carbonfibre; the reverse-hinged doors close electronically, as with the rears on the Phantom; the interior is a mixture of aluminium, rosewood and oak.
Powering it down the road is the Phantom’s 6.75-litre V12. As the 101 weighs less than the Phantom, it should outdo that car’s six second dash to 60mph.
Although the 101EX is a concept car, the chances of it following the path of the production convertible look to be high; an arrival time in 2008 perhaps, as Rolls aims to build on its 2005 sales growth.
