The VW Golf GTD will cost from £21,850 when it goes on sale in June.
The base price is for a three-door model with a six-speed manual gearbox. The five-door model will carry a £585 premium while the DSG ‘box will cost a further £1305.
The GTD’s 2.0-litre common rail turbo-diesel engine produces 168bhp and 258lb ft of torque, allowing it to complete the 0-62mph dash in 8.1 seconds and go on to reach 138mph.
Average fuel consumption is 53.3mpg, giving a single tank a theoretical range in excess of 640 miles.
CO2 emissions for the GTD are 139g/km – 1g/km more than the TDI 140 GT.
Visually, the GTD is differentiated from a standard Golf by a GTI-spec front bumper below a honeycomb grille and 17-inch alloys.
