The BMW is faster, cleaner, sprintier and delivers torque and power at lower RPM and it has an extra gear over the Macan. However the X4's looks divide opinion but perhaps most importantly the Porsche is cheaper. A little bit of gushing over the Macan aside, a rather balanced review.

This is a great test track. One false move and you wrap yourself around a tree. You have to admire the Autocar team for pushing so hard around here. I wouldn't dare. A test track edged by trees is like having a spike instead of an airbag. But if I was to drive around it, I would take the Macan for sure. If ever there was a car to take back 40 years in a time machine to astound people, this is probably it.

Not sure if the edit is doing your 'off road course' a disservice but I'd expect a Z4 could have managed that with similar ease. Besides these posh 4x4s with their heavy, over-engineered drive trains are generally shod on proper road tyres that leave them marooned at the roadside well below the ski resorts while ageing front wheel drive cars cruise past on snow chains. I don't really get these big ticket SUVs. Just buy a normal car FFS!

I think that a Citroën 2CV is better in off road.

This was a much more balanced and even-handed review than the other Autocar review (which also appeared in the print version), which seemed loath to give credit to the X4 in any area, bar having the better engine.
