Watch Chris Harris stretching the legs of the SLR Roadster

“I’ve never really gone very fast with the roof off,” says Autocar columnist Chris Harris in his video column this week, “and I don’t really like convertibles.” However, the subject of his video is exactly the kind of car to change all that – it’s Mercedes’ new SLR McLaren Roadster – and you can watch it in action by clicking here.Mercedes’ new topless SLR is a car designed to blow the lid off the market for convertible supercars. With 617bhp to call upon, it’s capable of rocketing to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds, and on to maximum 206mph. It’s got only one natural rival in Lamborghini’s Murcielago LP640 Roadster, and even that’s a supercar of an altogether more intense and demanding kind. And, as Chris says, the SLR Roadster is actually a more convincing car than the SLR coupe.“This is the ultimate San Tropez cruiser,” he says. “It’s got an incredibly relaxing powertrain; you just stick it in drive and off you go. In fact, it’s the car Mercedes and McLaren should have been building from the off.”
