SAIC-built car will race in MG Trophy events as soon as it goes on sale

The new MG6 will go straight into action as a race car if it goes on sale in the UK next year, according to reports in the Motorsport News newspaper.

The Shanghai Automotive-designed car is scheduled to become the first all-new MG model to go on sale in the UK since the 2001 MG ZS and ZT.

Both the hatchback MG6 and its saloon sister car (which is currently being sold in China as the Roewe 550) will be launched in the UK and Ireland, according to Eleanor de la Haye of the MG Motor Company.

Both versions will use the MG badge, say sources, and the most popular engine is expected to be the N-series 1.8-litre turbocharged engine, an updated version of Rover’s K-series engine.

MG Trophy race series co-ordinator Peter MacWaters told Motorsport News that the car could slot straight into the championship.

“The MG6 is a stunning-looking car and we would love to see it join the series as soon as possible,” he said. “A few of our competitors are considering building some for next year and we would gladly create a new class for them to race in.

“It would be fantastic to see a new MG out racing and if we could get a few out it might stir up some interest from MG in the series."
