New Mini Cooper SD to go on sale in July, priced from £19,450

Mini says its new three-door Cooper SD hatchback is the most torquey model that the brand has ever sold.

The Cooper SD is driven by the new 2.0-litre four-cylinder TwinPower turbocharged engine and has 258lb ft available from just 1500rpm. Combined with 168bhp, it enables the SD to achieve a 0-62mph sprint time of 7.3sec while recording a combined fuel consumption figure of 68.9mpg alongside CO2 emissions of 109g/km.

When equipped with an optional six-speed automatic transmission, the 0-62mph sprint time drops to 7.2 seconds. Mini says the engine offers "both highly spontaneous power delivery as well as a precisely-controlled fuel supply."

The new Cooper SD arrives in the UK this month and has a base on-the-road price of £19,450.

Mini Cooper 5-door hatch

Third-generation Mini hatchback comes with a range of new engines, more equipment and a practical five-door shape, but is it stretching the Mini name too far?

I'm not sure if there's much point with this model; yes it's very economical and quite quick, but it's a big £4,150 more than the base Mini Cooper which is already very economical with 62.8MPG and still pretty brisk, getting to 62MPH in 7.9 seconds. So this Cooper SD better have a lot more standard kit on board or you'd have to be doing a huge number of miles to just break even with the very slightly cheaper running costs it has over the base Cooper...
