Detroit leaks start early with pictures of supercharged LS9

The new range-topping Corvette supercar will be one of the brightest stars of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, and although we’ve yet to see pictures of the car itself, we can bring you these shots of the monstrous V8 at its heart, the new LS9 V8.These shots were leaked onto the internet by someone at General Motors yesterday. They show the new 6.2-litre, supercharged motor in detail. Among them are shots of the engine itself, the supercharger and the twin intercooler (see gallery). There has been no official announcement on how much power the new LS9 V8 will produce; estimates range from 600- to 700bhp. Whichever guess is correct, though, it’ll make the new super-Vette significantly quicker than the current range-topper, the 506bhp Z06, which itself is capable of 62mph in under four seconds and 199mph flat out. There is equal uncertainty as to what the new Corvette halo model will be called. Corvette ZR1, Corvette SS and Corvette Blue Devil are the names that have been bandied about so far. The ZR1 name was used before on the 1986, Lotus-tuned model; the SS would be short for Super Sport, and Blue Devil would be a nod to the original 1953 Corvette’s six-cylinder truck engine, which was known as the Blue Flame.
