Twenty Mini E electric cars will take to British roads from December - with interested drivers being asked to apply for the opportunity to drive them.
Applicants must live in south-east England, have a private car parking space and pay the electricity costs plus a monthly lease charge of £330, which includes VAT, insurance and maintenance. A full charge is expected to cost between £1.50 and £4.

This lease cost is subsidised down from £550 a month by a government-backed Technology Strategy Board.
The first 20 drivers will run the cars from this December, and a second round of applications will be taken in 2010 for a further 20 drivers.
Applications run until the end of December, and full details of the scheme and which postcode areas are eligible can be found at www.electricmini.co.uk.

Well BMW needs to try and recoup their their losses somehow. I wouldnt pay £550 to buy one outright

Dosent sound like a particularly cheap way of owning a car with those sky high lease prices.

Why does a cynical smile come to my face when I read 'lease cost subsidised down from £550 a month'? Who would pay £550 a month for a MINI? Was anyone in Mandy's department paying attention at that point? Nice little earner there I suspect.
