British firm's revenue exceeds expectations, with new SUV now accounting for more than half of all sales

Aston Martin Lagonda has reported higher than expected revenues for the first four months of 2021, with sales boosted by the success of the Aston Martin DBX SUV.

The British company sold 1353 cars in the first quarter of the year, including 746 DBXs – 55% of all sales. The total meant Aston Martin’s sales more than doubled compared with the same period last year, although sales then were hit by various coronavirus-related lockdowns, particularly in China.

Aston Martin’s revenue increased by 153% year on year to £224 million, which exceeded the expectations of market analysts. The firm reported losses of £38.1 million for the quarter, although that is an improvement, given the firm’s recent struggles.

Aston Martin said the increased revenue reflected both the rising sales of the DBX and stronger pricing from a planned reduction in stock levels of its GT and sport model lines.

Lawrence Stroll, the firm’s chairman, said the results demonstrate “the great progress we are making”. He added: “I am very confident in the future success and potential for Aston Martin as we transform the company to be one of the greatest luxury car brands in the world.”

Aston Martin said its outlook for 2021 remains unchanged, with the goal to sell around 6000 models, and earnings expected to be boosted by a number of planed specials in the second half of the year. The firm’s medium-term plans include a goal to sell around 10,000 cars annually by 2024/25.

Aston Martin CEO Tobias Moers is currently developing the firm’s Project Horizon growth plan, which will include a range of new models, including the company’s first fully electric vehicle, along with a major push to electrify its sports car and SUV lines.

Loyal and long-standing Aston customer, but I strongly fear that these sales are not representative of those to come. A friend of mine already on his 3rd one - as demand still high, he's changing out of them every couple of months at no cost. It's just flooding the market and artificially increasing sales figures.  

As for the car. Drives well, sounds good ish, looks a bit ok from some angles. I've gone back to an SVR, more car, less money and in due course I imagine stronger residuals. The Bentayga is all round a much better car too.  

I wish AM the very best, but I think they'll struggle to move more than 1800 a year of these when the dust settles.

Am l alone in this or when are these companies going to wake up to the real world. V8 and V12 engines sadly are no longer révèlent. If JLR and Aston do not get there heads together the Chinese and Koreans will take over!

On one hand, I'm glad to hear this positive news for Aston. Hopefully the DBX will help balance the books, however, I have already seen 22 available for sale, either in low mileage demo vehicles, or brand new ready to go stock sitting in UK dealers. It's taken a while to dwindle down the current DB11/Vantage dealer stock, so I think it's imperative Aston don't go over supplying this new model. I hope that future updates for the DB11 and Vantage will in turn, create a better revenue also. I have worked for and love this brand, but my money would still go on a DB9 or the previous Vantage j8ust on it's looks alone!
