BMW Group has strongly criticised the EU's 'Made in Europe' proposal requiring electric cars to be made within the bloc to qualify for a range of benefits.
Made in Europe is a core element of the Industrial Accelerator Act, which aims to halt the outflow of jobs from Europe while protecting European car makers from the influx of cheaper China-made rivals.

Just think if there was a made in the uk, and I mean made not just assembled from parts from elsewhere, we'd have so much of ... nothing (other than sewage and RR aero engines)!
Protectionism is what the EU was set up for!!! A few days ago I tried to explain it to some commenters on here - that's its very function, and it's why we had to leave - even if it has harmed our economy a little (though not everything is about money). The EU wants to restrict its citizen's freedom of choice even further...that's its aim, and I don't know why Oliver Zipse is taken aback by it.
Delusional.
I voted to leave but your comment makes no sense.
We DID leave yet this 'protectionism' would still harm our industry. You're actually making a case for staying in the EU as it'd mean we'd have a vote rather than have no control.
The part of this story I can't understand or perhaps have misread, is it only applies to cars under 4.2m How many cars does the UK produce that are under 4.2m? It only applies to the certain Mini's ( Mini 3dr? ) Which fleets only buy the smallest mini's? And it only applies to EV's which limits the field even more.
What it also says is that the extra import taxes the EU placed on Chinese made cars, which they introduced to achieve the same protectionist goal long before Donald Trump imposed his import duties, obviously isn't working.
"harmed our economy a little".......lordy the Brexit/Reform CoolAid really is potent.
