Currently reading: Mazda CX-7 gets diesel power
Revised sporty crossover can offer an oil-burner at last

This is the facelifted Mazda CX-7, which gets a mild styling refresh and, crucially for Europe, the option of a diesel engine for the first time.

The CX-7's external modifications include a larger grille with a more prominent Mazda badge, new chrome detailing, different designs of 18in and 19in alloy wheels and a lower, deeper front grille. Inside there are revised front seats, a new steering wheel, a Bluetooth-compatible sound system and a fresh multi-function display.

New safety kit includes Mazda's rear-vehicle monitoring (an advanced blind spot warning system) and emergency stop signal activation.

The key element, however, will be the new diesel option, which is based on the 2.2-litre turbodiesel unit that we've already seen in the 6 and 3. In the CX-7 the motor produces 170bhp and 295lb ft of torque, giving the big four-wheel-drive crossover a 0-62mph time of 11.3sec and a top speed of 124mph.

Those performance figures a some way shy of those posted by the regular turbocharged 2.3-litre petrol CX-7, but the diesel model does return 37.7mpg (combined cycle), an improvement of 10mpg, and emits 199g/km of CO2 instead of 243g/km.

Mazda has yet to release pricing or even a launch date for the CX-7 diesel in Europe, but given that importers here will have been calling for the variant since the model's launch here in 2007, we'd expect a quick turnaround.
