Here’s a phrase to savour: “One in 10 male motorists admit they bought their car in the hope that it would make them more attractive.”

According to a new study, a quarter of men told researchers (for Turtle Wax, by the way) that they loved the attention they get from members of the opposite sex when they are behind the wheel.

Meanwhile, four out of 10 male drivers believe the most romantic gift a woman could buy them is a new car and one in 10 confessed that they had gone out with somebody in the past just because of the car they drove. The same number again dumped their lover simply because of their choice of motor.

I am not quite sure what to make of this, apart from the obvious shallowness of my own sex. Luckily, I no longer have to worry about being attractive to anyone and I’ve not noticed that a shed-like BMW 7-series has helped in that respect. When you are young, though, being independently mobile is undoubtedly a good start. Oh, and a relatively warm, dry and comfy place to go for a canoodle.

This blog could go in a direction that could get us all into trouble. So before I regret anything, I just wondered whether you had bought a car to attract the opposite sex? If so, what was it? A Porsche 911. A Mk1 Toyota MR2, or a Marina estate?

Failing that, what would you buy now to show off? Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Toyota GT86, latest Mercedes SL?

Young Autocar readers will be hanging on your every response.
