Wheatcroft family want racing to resume at the track as soon as possible after failed F1 race

Donington Park’s owners have vowed to ensure racing resumes at the circuit as soon as possible after its previous leaseholder’s attempts to hold a Formula One race there failed.

The track has been left as a building site by ex-leaseholder Simon Gillett and the lease has now been handed back to the Wheatcroft family after attempts to sell it failed.

Kevin Wheatcroft, the son of former circuit boss Tom Wheatcroft, who died last year, said the circuit required more than half a million pounds of work to restore it to its former state.

“I can reassure people we are doing everything we can to get things back to normal at Donington Park,” he told the Derby Telegraph. “We were given back the keys to the circuit back and immediately started to work out what happens next. The first thing has been to try to save as many jobs as possible. As of this week, we have reopened the museum and cafe and race control office.

"We have been assessing what is required to put things back as they were. We reckon this will cost in the region of about £600,000, but to get it up to grand prix standard you could add a couple of zeroes.

"We want to get the place operational again. Hopefully we can get up and running again as soon as possible."

Wheatcroft said his family were still looking for someone to take on the circuit’s lease and run it in the long term.
