The AA Motoring Trust is demanding that the M25 Dartford crossing should be made free. It claims that the Government is ripping off drivers to the tune of £50 million a year.

When the Dartford bridge was first planned, the Government promised to stop crossing charges once the project had been paid for. According to the AA, that should have been a year ago this month.

But rather than drop tolls in 2003, private contractor Le Crossing was appointed. It charges £1 for cars to cross the Thames and up to £5.80 for trailered HGVs - motorbikes cross for free. Its contract runs until September ’06.
