It’s every car nut’s highlight of Al Pacino’s glittering movie career; that bit from Scent of a Woman when, playing retired US Army veteran Frank Slade, he deftly flicks a brand new Ferrari 348 Spider around a Manhattan corner while being apparently unable to see the steering wheel in front of him, let alone the busy New York traffic.But it must have been more than a highlight for one Estonian man arrested on Sunday in the town of Tartu. Police there took a 20-year-old into custody after stopping the car he was driving erratically. Their suspicion was that he was drunk; it emerged that he was, in fact, blind. Officers were alerted to the man’s sightlessness by the fact that he kept missing the tube for the standard Police blood-alcohol breath test. So how had he managed not to throw the car off the road totally? A 16-year-old was feeding him instructions from the passenger seat. Autocar’s sources suggest that this individual probably wasn’t a nervous-looking, tragically coiffured Chris O’Donnell. More’s the pity. If it had been, O’Donnell’s previous experience in shepherding blind drivers would have almost certainly have given the pair a decent chance of shaking off the law, and making it downtown in time for a glass of John Daniels and a quick tango with Gabrielle Anwar. Or something.
