Pininfarina will unveil its Rolls Royce Drophead-based car at Pebble Beach

This is Pininfarina’s ‘surprise’ for the forthcoming Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach in California: the Hyperion.

Images of the Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe-based machine have leaked onto the internet ahead of the car’s proposed debut on 17 August. The Hyperion is a one-off created for a wealthy car collector; it uses the Drophead Coupe’s 6.75-litre V12 engine and platform, but the driving position and windscreen have been moved back 400mm.

The car features such design oddities as a Girard Perregaux-designed watch that can be removed from its bracelet and bolted into the dashboard, and a fascia-mounted gun rack.

The Hyperion is the first one-off from Pininfarina since the Ferrari P4/5 it made for James Glickhaus in 2006; it’s also the first design revealed by the firm since its chairman and CEO Andrea Pininfarina was killed in a traffic accident on 7 August.

Remember when Pininfarina 'meant' design? That is truely hideous.

I seem to be in the minority as I rather like this offering. However, I do remember other examples of Pininfarina's and I don't think it always "meant" design. Try the Austin Cambridge/Morris Oxford/MG Magnette and Wolseley/Riley of the sixties!

No wonder they almost went bust recently. Reminds me of that Lexus Convertible.
